This short video explores the history of the world wide web and the different search engines that are taking over the world. They dive into this history from a futuristic perspective from the year 2014. The world wide web has indeed brought us very far but not everything is meant to be just a click away. Amazon, Google, blogger, and social network sites like friendster and facebook have become increasingly popular although not all of the effects of these sites are positive ones. Three-year-olds have become smarter than their parents when it comes to searching the web and there are indeed plenty of things on the web not suitable for children. Google has gotten to the top of the internet world as the number one search engine, one of the best email sites, news sites and has even joined one of the top online shopping centers, Amazon, to create googlezon. Have we stepped forward with this technology or is it crippling us by making everything too easy and accessible by increasing our dependence on these machines?
MOCOM 2020 The future of mobile media and communication

This is another video that shows the history of mobile media from 2020. I remember when I was a kid we had house phones, and the first cell phone I saw looked like a brick. We didn't have a computer in our house until I was about eight-years-old. Even then the internet started as a slow dial up connection. Considering that was about 14 years ago, we have progressed immensely over that time. Now it is rare to run into someone who does not have a cell phone and kids today probably don't even know house phones ever existed. Dial up internet connection? Forget it! If we can't download our shows, music, movies, pictures and anything else as quick as you can snap your fingers then, well the world just might as well end. Ok that might be a little bit dramatic, but really people are becoming more and more reliant on technology for every day things. For example, whatever happened to a simple road map? So many of my friends would be so lost in their every day lives without their GPS system in their car or their fancy smart phones. The thing that is important to remember is there are still many places, peoples, tribes, and cultures that get a long just fine the old fashioned way, and trust me-you will survive without checking your facebook everyday.

ReplyDeleteI actually realized this the other day when I was googling pictures of some celebrity. The results were certainly not appropriate for young children- many who have iphones, computers and ipods. We used to be worried that children were watching television as much and then educational DVDs like Little Einstein came out. I wonder if there will somehow be a reaction to this younger generation online. A way to prove you're of age when you google inappropriate things? Even googling someones name, haircut, stylist, etc can bring up scandalous photos. How do we prevent this from happening? Will phones create applications for toddlers? Is that even appropriate?
It is crazy to think that at a young age we saw the beginning of technology and only 10-15 years later we have iPhones, iPads, various social media sites, and toddlers are using computers and search engines. We will need to start putting restrictions and locks on certain websites like parents do on TV channels. We can see that people spend as much time on their computers as they watch TV. People today may even spend more time on their computers than watching TV.
ReplyDeleteYour question raised at the end here is very relevant in thinking about how we use this new mobile technology. Smart phones with Google apps do make information only a few seconds away at any moment, assuming you have service, which allows for endless fact searching. This may not be as scholarly as say, going to the library and looking for information in encyclopedias, but it does give us the same results. The speed and the accessibility is a benefit of this new technology that should be appreciated but respected. Mobile web technology is a great tool that can be utilized or abused. Once it becomes the latter of the two, for example aimless time wasting, we can see the negative side of the technology and when it begins to cripple us. With any new advancement there will always be positive and negative affects. It is up to the users to have good judgment and understanding of how to utilize the power in a constructive way.
